You’re no stranger to walks with your little one – fresh air and a change in scenery, what’s not to like?. So, the moment you could physically handle it (barring a heatwave, tsunami, or blizzard), you were off around the neighborhood.
Now that your little one is growing bigger by the day and getting more interested in the world around them, you might be wondering when it’s time for them to graduate to the stroller seat itself.
While there’s no set age for when your child is going to be ready to sit up on their own, the switch from either an infant seat or carriage mode to sitting up in the stroller seat depends more on their size and development than their age.
For the first six months or so of your child’s life, they’ll need to ride around in a stroller that allows them to fully recline until their muscles have developed further.
Once their back and neck muscles are strong enough to support themselves entirely, an infant can sit upright. This usually happens between five-to-seven months old, but can happen earlier or later, depending on your little one and their development.
Before your little one can sit up on their own, first they usually master holding their head up and sitting (with some parental guidance). Tummy Time is also key for your little one to have stronger muscles. Tummy time, which is when you lay your child on their stomach and teach them to lift their head, helps develop and strengthen the neck, back, and stomach.
Somewhere between five and seven months your little one is strong enough to sit up by themselves and graduate to sitting upright in the stroller seat. To best help your child, make sure you have a stroller with multiple recline positions to accommodate for their growing independence and abilities. Having the ability to change the direction of the seat (facing you or facing the world) allows your little one bonding time with you and exploration time, too!
